Central Web Services and ONID (OSU's unified network authentication initiative) are partnering to bring ONID users the next-generation of web hosting tools for use in their personal web space.
On March 2nd, 2003 Central Web Services will begin hosting all ONID web pages at http://oregonstate.edu/~username (where 'username' is the ONID username).
Currently, ONID users have personal home pages addressable in the form: http://www.onid.orst.edu/~username. After the change, these addresses will be updated to http://oregonstate.edu/~username.
Special steps are being take to ensure that existing webpages continue to function properly before, during and after this upgrade. Following the update, old http://www.onid.orst.edu addresses will be seamlessly redirected to the appropriate new URLs and current links and bookmarks will continue to function. ONID users will not be required to make any changes to their web page content, and will be able to access and update their content in the same fashion as they have previously.
The new environment has added support for PHP 4.2.3 and server-side includes (SSI). In addition, it will provide increased capacity, speed and redundancy when compared to the older ONID web hosting environment. The new environment leverages several open-source tools such as Linux, Apache, PHP and MySQL... and paves the way faster implementations of the new web tools in the future.
Other enhancements are planned for the near future. Toward the end of Spring Term, Central Web Services and ONID will begin providing MySQL databases for students upon request. Each student will be limited to one database and will have an easy-to-use web interface for managing the database. Keep an eye on http://onid.oregonstate.edu for more information!
